Name of Piece: Journey to the Bell

The ringing of the bell has been a tradition commonly practiced after a patient completes their last round of chemotherapy. Sam Bernal’s art piece encapsulates the journey to that symbolic ringing of the bell. Large waves crash over the beginning of the path symbolizing the many physical, mental, and spiritual challenges that lie ahead. Throughout the long and difficult journey to remission, the bell shines as a symbol of hope, joy, and possibility. With a profound personal connection to the impact of cancer, including the survival of several family members and the intimate care of a dear friend named Tate, Sam Bernal is driven by a mission to support those on their journey to healing. Witnessing Tate’s resilience and the toll cancer took on her body, Sam found great inspiration in her strength and spirit.

Ricky Blake

Name of Piece: Chris Hawk Northside

Ricky, an artist, and educator hailing from Huntington Beach, is deeply influenced by the culture of California’s landscape, history, and surf culture. Ricky’s connection to cancer, having lost both grandfathers early on and his mother-in-law to pancreatic cancer in 2016, fuels his passion for his art. His latest painting depicts Chris Hawk, a surfer and shaper who succumbed to cancer in 2009, captured in a Christ-like pose emerging from the sea’s embrace, and being baptized by mother nature. Painted on a surfboard shaped by Chris himself, the artwork serves as a poignant tribute to loved ones lost too soon. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Ricky is actively involved in surf culture preservation and education. His artistic influences include renowned figures such as John Severson, Howard Pyle, Egon Schiele, and Toulouse Lautrec.

Mark Kingsley Brown

Name of Piece: Mele Moana (Ocean Music)

Mark Kingsley Brown shares a deep love and respect for the ocean, a sentiment shared among surfers worldwide. Brown’s surfboard painting honors his sister Karen, a cancer survivor, symbolizing both her resilience and the advancements in healthcare. The fish depicted on the board represent ocean life, while music serves as a universal language of connection. Generously donated by San Clemente shaper Tim Patterson, the surfboard carries a rich history, intertwining with the legacy of the first Olympic Gold Medal in men’s surfing, held in Japan. As a resident of Carlsbad, California, Brown has been deeply touched by the impact of cancer, particularly through his sister’s courageous battle with stage 4 colon cancer. Witnessing her journey has inspired him to recognize the importance of ongoing research and advancements in cancer treatment.

Robert Madrigal, “Chuy”

Name of Piece: In the Land of the Beautiful Sunsets is the Home of “The Healers” La Tierra de los Duendes- “The Land of The Healers”

Repurposing a Degree 33 Surfboard, this piece reflects an area known in Mexico as the “land of the Duendes.” A magical place; a place inhabited by people with the power to “heal.” The board represents a place where the body and soul can be transported to be healed. Chuy’s artistic expression gravitates toward the ocean, resulting in commissioned, showcase, and commercial pieces exhibited globally, including at the International Surfing Museum. This dedication is deeply personal, driven by the loss of their friend Tony Soriano to prostate cancer. Chuy’s commitment to cancer research and support initiatives honors Tony’s memory and underscores their belief in the power of art to effect positive change. Through their artistic talent, advocacy efforts, and enduring love for the waves, Chuy continues to leave an indelible mark on surf culture and societal well-being.

Lawrence McAdams

Name of Piece: Sea Water Anthem

Inspired by the beauty of the ocean, and painted on his own surfboard, Lawrence McAdams’ art piece embodies the idea that when we work together with purpose, we can achieve significant and uplifting results. Driven by firsthand experiences, including the loss of his father to cancer and his wife’s 9-year battle with lymphoma, McAdams is deeply committed to contributing to the fight against cancer. McAdams woke up literally and figuratively, in the fall of 1999, with a clear calling to become an artist. Since then, Lawrence has committed himself to capture in paint, the magic of life with its longing, adventure and beauty calling it ‘Narrative Realism.’ His dedication to capturing life’s essence has garnered recognition, including the acquisition of his painting “Effervescent” by the esteemed Hilbert Museum of California Art.

Melissa Murals

Name of Piece: OC Local Surf Spot

This piece showcases local ripper, Brett Simpson going down the line, and a Costa Rican flair. Melissa is an artist from Huntington Beach. She grew up surfing competitively and was an ocean lifeguard. She went to Edison High School where she started painting murals. When Melissa was 16, her mom, Melody Murphy, allowed Melissa to paint a large ocean underwater scene on the living room wall in her condo, and from this point on Melissa loved to paint large spaces. Graduating from Cal State University Long Beach with a BA in studio art, Melissa now has murals all over Orange County and is currently a successful artist making a living from her art. She has painted murals at Pacific City, Sunset Beach, downtown Huntington and many more. Cancer is a cause close to Melissa’s heart, as her partner is a cancer survivor.

Joshua Ben Paskowitz

Name of Piece: Native Surfer

Joshua’s mission is to exalt the people and the culture that had such a strong influence and close relationship with his family. Joshua’s dad loved surfing. He made sure they understood the Aloha Style and made it clear these values were absolute. They were a part of a surf family that shared the love of the ocean and the passion born from commitment to it. “Native Surfer” is an art board that blends cultural elements with the exhilarating spirit of surfing. The piece captures the essence of a surfer immersed in their environment, seamlessly integrating indigenous motifs like the Quetzalcoatl to evoke a sense of action and connection with nature. The vibrant colors and dynamic composition work together to convey a powerful fusion of tradition and modernity in the context of surfing’s vocabulary of images. The “Native Surfer” is the original soul surfer, the artist that summons natural harmony through passionate commitment.

Dave Reynolds

Name of Piece: Shattered

Dave C Reynolds is a Huntington Beach based surfer/artist/entrepreneur. In 1987, Dave had the idea to create art and trophies using scale model mini surfboards. He approached the World Surf League at the time with his cool ideas for trophies. They dug his work and placed the first order for the end of the tour banquet in Hawaii. Since 1988 Dave has made more surf trophies than anyone in history. Some of his customers include the World Surf League, Quiksilver, Rip Curl and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. During the COVID-19 shutdown Dave re-invented himself by focusing on his relief sculpture techniques and adding marine life art to his product line. Dave has always had a love and respect for the environment, always trying to live in harmony with the ocean and its inhabitants. Dave’s father Lloyd Hamner Reynolds died from cancer in 2007. He is dedicating his art surfboard creation called “Shattered” in his honor.
